Cracked Knotter Frame

Looking over my JD 14T yesterday, I noticed the knotter frame on the right side (standing behind the baler) next to the bevel gear has been brazed at the top. It looks like it has been used this way for some time and apparently is holding. At first glance I thought it was a bunch of grease piled-up as there is grease fitting at that location.

Is it possible that the frame was cracked or broken at sometime? How common is this on a 14T? What would cause a knotter frame to crack or break in the first place?

Knotters seem to be in otherwise great shape.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

My 14T has been welded at that spot too. Don't know who did it but it hasen't caused me any grief yet.

In a word - TORQUE! Something broke, jammed, seized, whatever and something had to give. Nothing mechanical lasts forever. It could have been a faulty casting but I doubt it. JD had and still has quality control I'm sure. I read on this site a new frame is $700+ but you can't buy them from JD - no stock. That tells me you're not the first one to have this happen. I believe I mentioned this in a earlier post about 14T's and any other baler for that matter, they require both maintenance and an understanding of what makes them tick. Think about it - selling tens of thousands of machines with not one, but two complicated mechanisms (knotters) and releasing them on the public and then the whole outfit has to timed and kept there! I'm a trained mechanic and they sometimes give me fits! Broken needles, bill hooks, knife arms, gears, shafts, springs, etc., etc. - it all happens at some point. But there's not a much greater feeling of satisfaction farming than looking behind the tractor and seeing 100's of those cursed bales behind you!! M2CW.
