To the guys that provided so much input on my NH 489; the clunking sound ended up being caused by a broken grade five bolt bolt that attaches the lower roller splined shaft to the gear box shaft! Hey Travis from New Holland, you were right next to the problem, thanks! How often have you all heard of this happening?

I'm still going to replace the sprocket (Nylon, right Steve from New Holland?) and chain so I can avoid wobble box damage in the future. I think New Holland should have made replaceable spindles that mounted to the rollers instead of making the shaft part of the roller? Once the splined ends are screwed-up or the threads get really boogered-up the rollers are screwed!

Bill, I'm glad you found the problem. Actually, this is another 489 problem that is all too common. In most cases, the splines on the roll shaft hold up fairly well. Most of the wear will be in the drive hub. A new hub should fix you right up. Steve

A good machine shop might be able to replace the bad end on the roller, or fix whats in there, heck of a lot cheaper thatn a new/used on.

I don't know what you could do for the splines but I have fixed the threads in the end of the roller with a helicoil. I did that several years ago and it is still holding.
