IH 241 big baler update.

I finnaly got out my IH 241.
I pleased to report that this $300 big baler does indeed make big bales.
I was supprised I expected some thing major to be broken.
All I did was tighten the main chain, Grease her up. I put some oil on all the bearings. I was told to do that.
Hooked her up to my 400 and Wala she worked.
I did have some trouble getting it to feed at 1st. For some reason the compresion roller was screwed down tight as a drum. Hay couldnt get in.
I lostened it up a bit and she fed just fine after that.
I still have some tweeking to do. I rolled up some crap hay in the small field west of my house just to get it cleaned up.
Got 3 rolls from it. Tying seemed ok, although the knife dint seem to want to cut the twine.
The bales seem loose to me. ( Like I know)
Some one had mentioned a two spring tension spring set up for these. Mine has only one.
Any way not to bad for the 1st go. I want to get a year or two out of this thing before getting a Vermier.

I'll bet you don't have the compression roller made of the tire carcass--you probably have the one that may have had rubber on the out side but has probably worn off over time. As far as the dual spring setup--if you do run this baler for alot of bales you will definitly want to get it. I imagine your bales will be only about half as tall this winter as they were when you baled them up(from squatting). The dual springs make a world of difference. If you haven't at least picked up an owners manual for it you should. You can usually find the owners manual pretty cheap and it will help out alot.

Yup I need a manual. Just havent had time to call for one during bussiness hrs.
I am on the hunt for a 2 spring set up now.

I can't believe you wrote in - I got a 241 for $200 at a sale last July - not this July - LAST JULY.... tried it once and couldn't get it to feed - then spent some serious time analyzing and examining and cleaning and adjusting....
repaired a belt or two - but got my first bale in crap hay (foxtails and tumbleweed) about a week ago - so mowed a ditch and a little area 0 raked her up and got three more - I have quite a few problems yet - but for 15 bales or so a year it looks OK

will keep u posted - going to invest in one of those grease gun deals to grease sealed bearings though....

well it is not supposed to be a long term fix by any means - BUT there are so many bearings (all sealed) on that baler - even right now - after a couple of bales I have a couple of bearings that are getting pretty warm, even though they are in good shape - which means there is no lubrication in them anymore - so u drill a small hole in the side of the bearing and use this attachment which goes on a grease gun and inject grease into the bearing to make it last a little longer - some people even use large animal needles.....

what do you plan on doing with your 300 now? also did u get a bale spike for your H to move the bales or what are you useing to move them

My 300. I plan on taking my time now and doing a good job on the recondition. Before the 400 I planned on just getting it running so I could use it. Now I can do her right.
No bale spike yet. I need to get one soon.

I had one of those balers for a while but it took anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes to get it to start rolling after each bale.The one i had the bale tension was set by hydraulic pressure. It pushed the rear of the baler open and forced the oil out of the cylinders through an adjustable valve body on front of the baler. It did make big bales when you could get it to work. Hope it keeps working, Ken.
