I am getting ready to plant some winter wheat. I was wondering if I could apply some of the fertilizer in the fall before i plant it? I assume the nitrogen would have to wait until spring but am not sure. What fertilizer should I be using? Would the fertilizer be the same as the starter fertilizer used for corn? thanks a lot!

I sowed mine a week ago today, and used 18-46-0. This is what we have always used, and found out this fall that's what ks. state recommends. We also use this on our corn. Some places around here only handle 11-52-0, so i guess you'll have to take what you can find. I use the fertilizer attachment on the drill, rather than broadcast it and work it in. I shoot for 100 lbs. per acre, but this year it ended up at 126. The density changes every fall, it seems like, and I'd rather put on too much than not enough.

Don't guess. Take a soil sample and tell the tester what the field was last planted with and what you are planting next. The test results will recommend exactly how much of which fertilizer and/or lime you should apply. my nickel Dick Davis
