JD 14T Spindle Wagon Towing Question

I have two JD 14T balers. The working one is year 1962 make and the parts one is 1958 make.

The pick-up side spindle on the '62 is smaller than the flywheel side, but it does not have the set-up for pullng a wagon.

The pick-up side spindle on the '58 is the same size as the flywheel side, but it has the wagon towing package.

Both spindles on the '58 and the flywheel side spindle on the '62 are the same size.

My question is - which is correct? When the wagon pulling kit was in stalled, did it include the larger spindle? Is this simply a difference in age or did some one snap off the pick-up side spindle (perhaps hitting a ground hog hole) and retrofit with the larger spindle?

Thought I would ask before I buy any bearings.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

According to my book (1964) up to s/n 48070 used the same spindles both sides - Part # AM 3510 E. From there to s/n 75924 again the same both sides but different style - Part # AM 3496 E. The latest ones used different ones - L.H. Part # AM 3496 E and R.H. Part # AE 14599 E. One or more of these numbers could be superceded but JD will know that. With 40+ years of history behind your baler, it's anybody's guess whether it's still original. Do you have the center hitch (tongue under the center of the bale chute or the one offset to the pickup side of the baler. My book doesn't say anything about changing spindles with hitch, only a cross brace under the bale chute. Tow load shouldn't have any thing to do with spindle load. HTH.

Rob,

I do not have the center hitch. It is offset to toward the pick-up side of the baler.

Thanks,
Bill
