Hi all, I have a very general question. This spring I am planning on planting and harvesting approx. 15 acres of corn. The tractor I will be using is a Massey Ferguson 65. Would I be better off using a 3 or 4 bottom plow ? Also my finished product needs to be whole kernel corn. What implements would be needed, I am starting from scratch and plan on using all used equipment. Thanks for your patience.
Bob.

We used to pull 3-14" with our 65 in heavy ground. You don't necessarily need a plow. There are 2-row no-till corn planters out there. A 65 row-crop, properly weighted, might even be able to handle a 4-row no-till. Spray the field to kill the weeds and go right in and plant. If you want to harvest shelled corn, you have a problem. You can invest in an expensive SP combine with a corn head (a good used one will often cost too much for 15 acres) or a bigger tractor to pull a 2-row New Idea picker-sheller and gravity-unload wagon. IF there is someone in your area who already combines corn, see if you can hire it done. Just make sure you set you planter row width to match his corn head width. Now, if you want to leave the kernels on the cob for storage, a New Idea 323 one-row picker, and a gravity wagon or two would work with your 65. You would also need an elevator and a corn crib of some sort. Then you let it air dry in the crib for a few months, get an old stationary corn sheller, and start shoveling into it. Depending on where you live, a sheller, picker, elevator and wagon may cost you less than a maintenance-headache SP combine.

In my ground, I would have to be limited to a 16 two bottom. I have a lot of clay and the ground gets hard as a rock. The Massey deal said to consider 12-15 Hp per 16 inch bottom dependent on soil type. With 32 HP, eaisly calculated. I have a MF255 which is a 3X16.

I plant a little corn the old way with a plow, disc, old used Covington planter, and a cultivator. I want to get a sprayer and then not cultivate it. I use an old 8N to plant and cultivate and leave the wheels out. I don't gather it since I plant it for the deer and turkey. I plant 3-4 acres a year.
