Bought a NH 268 a couple weeks ago and it was missing ties on the right side.Found the knot was hanging on the bill hook, after checking the bearing on the end of the bill hook has some small flat spots, would this be the problem, and can just the bearing be replaced?TIA,Bob.

Flat spots on the billhook roller probably are not causing your tying trouble. However, you should replace the billhook. Yes, you can replace just the roller and tongue assembly, but the little drive pin usually comes out hard so I no longer try replacing the roller and tongue. As far as knots sticking on the billhook, boy, I just don't know where to begin. It could be a rough billhook, a dull knife, a misadjusted knife, a twisted twine finger rod, baling too tight, or too much tension on the twine at the clamp on the bale box. I guess I would start with the little clamp on the side of the twine box. Loosen that 1/4" bolt with the small compression spring untill the twine has a very light drag on it when you pull the string through the clamp. Also, don't bale with the bale press any tighter then you absolutely have too. Steve

I have found that if the roller is that worn, the billhook itself usually doesn't have much life left in it either, so replacing the whole assembly, costly though it may sound, may save you a lot of grief in the long run.

Flat spots on the bearing surface indicates excessive wear, and it should be replaced. Wife just bought a 268 for our operation, and I have not taken the knotters apart to see how much you have to replace. I have previously borrowed this baler, and it does a great job for us. I'm sure you will be happy with yours, soon's you get that knotter whipped into shape!
