How timely. Just got home 2 hours ago with a # 8 I found locally. I know some of the parts are available at those other tractor farm supply type stores, pitmans, knives, rivots, rock guards, even cutter bars. Would like to know of a source for info on years of manufacture and the like. Maybe the JD dealer can help me with that when I go to get the manuals.

I have a No.8 that I trim with behind my 50. Pretty much what everyone has told you..they are an update to the 5....more streamlined in apearance. The No. 9 is the same era only 3 pt. hitch. The only complaint I have is pulsation from the pitman. I believe the 38 which replaced the 8 used a belt drive and counterweighted head which probably shakes less.

Can't tell you much about the model as I restore and hay with my #5's, but a good rural JD dealer will sell you a parts catalog with all the numbers in it. They can then look these numbers up in the computer and tell you if they are still around. The JD #5 has many parts still available.
Pricey though they be. Sometimes it is better to buy two and make one out the pair.

I have a #8w I use a lot. Is a good mower. The W was wider to be used on row crop tractors so you didn't have to move tires out. It is similar to the #5 in mounting but think all of them have the quick hitch. Same width on hitch as #5. Sickles same as number 5 as are guards and some other parts. I have a #5 also that I used befor the 8 not sure if one is better than the other but the #8 looks more stremelined. The number 8 has a slip clutch in the gearbox whereas the #5 had it on pto shaft. Breakaway safety is different between the 2. I think most parts are still available as far as wear items. I think it is a good mower and have used it on an MT, 430 and IH SMTA. On the MT I had to move the mounting brackets in. (spacers mentioned in operator's manuel)

The No. 8 is a semi mount the same as a No. 5, uses a 8" tire verses the No. 5's 9" tire, Cutter bar is the same, the no. 5 has a 3" cutterbar stroke with 3" guard spacing where the No. 8 has a 3 1/2" stroke so that instead of stoping dead center of the guards it goes slightly past dead center, this design is supposed to make it easier to pull as the sections are already moving when starting to cut, I have 2 No. 5 and a No. 8 as colectables, never used them, used Oliver and CoOp mowers and J D & D B horse drawn mowers, also have Detroit Harvester (Dearborn & Ferguson) M M and N I as colectables with several McMormick horse mowers

Leroy,

Have you used COOP or Cockshutt 15 or 15A mowers (hand and rope lift)? What can you tell me about them as I have one of each.

Thanks,

It was years ago that I had the Coop Mower, It was a hand lift, was in bad shape when I got it, Found a Cockshut with rope lift that I used for parts, never used the rope lift altho did use the rope lift on oliver that I still have, converted it over to cylinder lift, The Coop and Cockshut mowers I never did know a model no. for. Have a friend that has some now yet as colectables. The one I had I used on a 46 J D B, worked good, didn't work as well on Farmall H or Ferguson 30. If you have a sepsific question I may be amle to get you an answer. Leroy
