New Holland 273 Hayliner

We have a chance to buy a 273 Hayliner at an auction and I have been reading some of the posts to get your opiinion. Thanks for all the great info. We will definetly try to get it. I would like to ask a dumb question, but I need to know. Are the 273's designed to take poly twine or were they made for sisal and converted? We have a Massey Fergusen #3 (yes they did make them) and I had trouble adjusting the knotter for poly. I assume the 273 is made for poly.

I had a 273 and sisal works the best.

I just got one and occasionally one of the knotters holds on to cut pieces of sisal. This causes the knotter to miss since the leftover piece is in the way. Any tips?

Have you considered asking your local NH dealer directly? If you buy the baler, you'll be seeing him anyway, and he'l have a quick, definative answer for you. My suspicion is that most balers made since the advent of poly twine are adaptable, by means of different billhooks, for either variety. The Dealer will be able to help you identify which billhooks you have.

my 273 bales real good with sisal AND plastic. I asked the dealer after I got it and he said go ask the mechanic. shop guy asked if it had stainless hooks and said if it did it was good to go. HOWEVER-- "try it, if it works good OK if not I'll come out and try to make it work but---" I dropped the plastic 9000 in and ran couple thousand bales of straw. long story short, some will and some won't just like some never miss a bale and some just need to be shot to be put out of your missery

I've used poly in my 273 for the last 12 years. I had trouble when I switched but ground the end off the bill hook to allow it to close farther and it works great. I get 1-2 missed bales per thousand (including switching balls of twine) consistantly. I bale hay and straw and average 200+ bales per hour. Great balers.

I just recently bought a 273, for a "back-up" baler. I got it at such a good price, I couldn't pass it by. When I went to get it, the previous owner gave me 16 bales of poly twine. He said that he had used it to bale straw this summer, with good success. I have all my hay done for the year, so I can't try it out untill next summer. All I have to go on, is the word of the guy I bought it from. (He has a barn full of straw, tied with poly twine, so I'm fairly certain he's shooting straight)

i had a friend who tried using poly twine in a NH 268, which is basicly the same baler i believe. he couldnt get it to work very well, but the baler never worked perfect on sisal either, but it did work better on sisal than poly. i think that there might be a different style bill hook that you install for poly, but im not ceartain, i seem to remember hearing someone say that once.

The 268 balers had to have the bill-hooks changed to handle poly. I had a 268 and switched to poly around 1970 - 71. In those years, Esso (Imperial Oil) made the poly twine and had reps change the bill hooks in order to get people to try the poly twine. Early poly was a bear to handle as it had one heavy blue strand combined with several smaller clear strands. Really hard on the hands but resisted rodent damage much better than sisal.

I have a 273, and I've only used sisal in it. I've never heard of anyone using poly in a 273, but that doesn't mean it can't be done, I guess.
