Hi all!
I have 5 acres and a new home. I would like to start prepearing the soil for grass in the spring. The field has been disked once and has misc corn remains all over.

I would like to know what type of impliment would be best for removing the corn remains. I have a scraper blade but was wondering if a rake blade or other attachment would be more usefull. I would like to attempt this myself so I can get some seat experience.

Thanks Brian

Brian,

Just disk the field and plant KY31. Don't worry about the corn, it will rot soon enough. You might sample the soil at you extension office to check for proper ph etc.

Thanks JDDoug & Red & Green, It sounds like disking it under is the start. I will see if one of the local guys would be able to do this as I don't have a disk, yet!

Here is the city boy question of the day...What is KY31? Some sort of grass I am guessing. Also would I be waisting time & $$$ to plant the seed in November? (assuming it doesn't snow)

Thanks for the assistance. Brian P

KY31 is Kentucky 31, a tall fescue that is very hardy, drought resistant and makes a good lawn or pasture.

The best time to sow grass is the first part of September. You may want to plant Rye grass this winter, it comes up quicker providing a good ground cover, then you can disk the Rye under in the spring and plant the KY31. If you do decide to sow the KY31, the snow won't hurt it, it will help to settle it in the ground, then it will germinate this spring.

In my opinion, the best thing you can do is just disk the stalks up as as best you can this fall. Then plant some rye or wheat for a winter cover. Then in the spring till that under and then plant whatever you want for your yard. The stalks will rot and add a little nutrients to the soil.
