U-joint yoke stuck on shaft

I need to replace a u-joint on the end of a driveshaft connected to a Ford finish mower. I believe I know what I need to do to remove and install the u-joint (thanks to several messages in ytmag forums and the library). But the yoke piece attached to the mower deck's driveshaft is apparently rusted on. At least I cannot get it off. I've tried heat then cool water, lots of Liquid Wrench, etc. I need to get it off to use a vise because I have not been able to get the bearing cups to budge even with a 4lb. sledge and a large punch.

dennis, its ok to pound, cuss, heat & beat while removing all of this stuff BUTT when replacing with new have a vise or big C-clamp with a clean towel or cardboard to catch needle bearings , put a little bearing grease in the cups to help hold the bearings in do not put the grease zerk in untill your done, use sockets for spacers w/clamp its a 4 handed job most of the way...slow & easy(praying sometimes helps)

1 You can try a puller and tapping and heating on the yoke to jar loose
2 You can try to rent or borrow a u-joint tool like chip said
3 You can make a home made u-joint tool for on mower repair. start with a large heavy duty c clamp. Need one socket with a outside diameter smaller than cup size to push with. one socket with the inside diameter larger than cup size to recieve.(I welded a nut on thread end of clamp for more force with impact but not nesecerry just easier) Tighten on clamp as tight as you can get it, spray with oil then wack yoke to jar loose cups. tighten-spray wack ect.

Any chance that you can put either a gear or hub puller on it? If you can, try cranking down on it as hard as you can and heating the yoke while also increasing the tension. Also, you might try puting household ammonia on the splines or around the shaft where the yoke goes on. I know you probably think that this is BS, but trust me it does work.

Jim - I have not tried the ammonia yet. I'll get some. I thought I had it when a friend at work mentioned that there was probably a snap ring on the end of the shaft to keep the yoke from flying off if the bolt came off/out. He was right, there was a snap ring. But this yoke would not fly off of this shaft. I hope the ammonia has some effect. I only have a little torch, no acetylene, so I don't think I have been able to generate enough heat to do anything with that approach. I'll let you know if the ammonia helps.

There is a special tool you can get that looks like a big c-clamp. One end hooks behind the u-joint and the screw end pushes on the bearing cap. A lot of auto repair shops have them. Maybe someone could lend you one, or throw the mower on a trailer and bring it to a shop. Works best with an air impact wrench. Banging on the caps generally won't work in any event. They need to be pressed out.

In the old days I have resorted to cutting one side of the yoke with a torch.

When my towable bush hog's yoke wore out, I couldn't get it off the shaft, couldn't get the universal joints out either. Bought a new (used) 3 point hitch cutter. :-(
