What is your opinion of the NH 404 crimper? I haven't seen it yet, but want an idea of how well they work, parts availability and years made. Anything in particular I should watch out for? What is a good price for one in fair condition?

Also, will a tedder do the same job as well as one of these crimpers?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Bill, what are you mowing your hay with? If you are mowing with a haybine, then I don't reccomend a 404 crusher. If you are mowing with something that is not already crimping/crushing the hay, then a crimper/crusher is definately the way to go. If you are not crimping/crushing your hay when mowing, a tedder is NOT going to dry your hay as fast as a crimper/crusher. By the way, I have to defend the 404 crusher. It was a good machine. They really did work well. I'm not sure why the other gentleman had so much plugging unless the slip clutch on his machine was not set right. Do not be afraid of it. However, don't pay too much. They can be bought pretty cheap. Steve

Steve,

I would be using it on sickle bar mowed grass hay.

BTW, if one had a New Holland Sickle bar mower with (I have read of these, but don't know the model number) a PTO out on it, can you mow and condition at the same time with the NH 404?

Thanks,
Bill

Yes you can. The 2 3 point models are 450 and 451. The 2 trailer models are 455 and 456. Steve

We had a NH 404. That thing was junk. Plug! plug! If you can find a John Deere 22 you'll have the best crimper ever made.

I think that you are better off buying a tedder. Not only will it speed the drying like the crimper, but it can also salvage your hay after it's rained on. I had an IH 2A conditioner, and it was always getting plugged if you didn't follow the swath exactly right. I later bought a NH 162 tedder - much faster, and a lot less headaches as well. Tedders will cost more, as they actually have value ...
