I,m having trouble cutting bahia grass hay. My mower will start shaking and vibrating so bad the pitman rod comes loose no matter what speed i travel or pto rpm i use. Any thing you guys think could help. I think my blade may be to loose. The grass was kinda damp it was late yesterday eve. It cut fine 2 months ago. I would appreciate any help. I installed new blade before first cutting and have only cut about 6 acres.

the sickle blade is loose I think i have to much clearance between the blade and the ledger plates. especially at the end next to the pitman rod. I tightened it up a bit yesterday and it helped some. Not quite there though. Thanks for the help.

Most important, knife sections must lay flat on guard plates.May require benting guards to line up. .015" clearence between section and clip is best. Clips can also be bent or shimed to get right clearence.

As Paul said, loose is bad. With the mower stopped, check everything for loose bolts, nuts, rivets and such...could be the hold-downs, and on mine, sometimes the rock guards get loose and cause problems; also the sickle sections themselves.

Once you find the loose part(s), tighten them. I have started using thread-lock on everything on my sicklebar mower before I tighten it and have had fewer problems nowadays.

good luck!

What part is loose? Loose is bad.

Damp grass - never works well with a sickle. Mow when it is dry!

Have you made sure the hold downs are holding the sickle down, are the ledger plates (guards) sharp as well as the sickle, are you in time, and so on.

What part is loose?

My 501 had excessive wear on the pitman "clamps" to the ball socket. So I had to change the ends of the pitman. For me the problem was solved.
