In an upcoming auction, there is going to be one of thes for sale in excellent condition. What is the minimum size tractor that can run one of these and what is an optimal size tractor without over powering it. Also, what is the going price for one of these? Thanks for your time in answering.

In 2001 I bought a 489 for $3750. It was in very good condition and used very little as it still had paint on the gards.

I have a 489. I use my John Deere 3020, and 4020 to pull it. I have also run it once with a JD 620 when the other 2 were being used on other wquipment. All of the above ran it fine, but the extra power of the 4020 keeps it spinning faster and seems to make the gaurds plug up less often in downed thick hay. I would say a good HP range for the 489 would be 50 to 150 HP. Just be careful with small light weight tractors as the 489 is a heavy built machine. I am not sure on a going price today, as i have had mine for a while.

It is hard to over power one if the slip clutches are free. We pulled a 460, 469, and 479 with a 35hp for years a 50 hp. works real nice on one. There is a lot of side draft to a haybine.
