Tire needed for Deere Spreader

I have a little old Deere manure spreader that is all rust and no green for color but runs like a champ - it has 16 x 5.5 lugged tires. Last winter I tore up of the tires trying to dislodge it from the ice. I would have been much more careful if I knew how hard it would be to find one - I have searched the web and all local sources and can't find one. Can anyone out there help me??? My manure pile is getting bigger by the day.

The other option we used was a good 16" truck tire with a good mud/snow tread. Worked fine. We also used a regular truck tire (with good deep tread) and made cuts across the tread for additional traction.

I see Miller Tire has 600-16 lug tires listed in their book. I would think they would work.

good idea Bud! I'm also thinking of booting the tire with a kit from Miller tire - anyone had experience with that?

Ted,

If you can find a tire of the right size you can always put a chain on a smooth tire to get the grip of a traction tire.

Leroy - it's a real small spreader with only two ground drive wheels so I need the lugs which is why it's so hard to find - there are lots of front tractor ribbed tires of that size. It may not be a Deere there are only small specs of green left and no id tags that I can see.

Are you talking about a front tire on a 4 wheel spreader because Deere never made a spreader with smaller than 7:50 x 20 tires on drive wheels, for front wheels a 5:50 x 16 tractor tire will work. If it is as I think I read your post then I think it is a 2 wheel tractor spreader probably an Oliver, Green, or sister version Dearborn or possibly a McCormick that over time somebody had repainted and a 6:00 x 16 tire is avaible that is a lug tire and will work or change wheels for 15" and go for a 6:70 x 15, John Deere corn planters used this size

I know Farm/Fleet ~ Fleet/Farm has, or can order them. So can Miller Tire (dot com). Having checked with them over a year ago for my John Deere Model L,Series 51 spreader. [The Model L Series 51 replaced the Model H in 1952 and was produced through 1961]. I was fortunate to get mine from an Amish farmer.

I faced a similar problem with an IH No. 100 Spreader as I was restoring this machine and needed two 550 X 16 inch lug tires. I tried everyone. No luck. Even Miller was out of them and the price was horrific when they expected to get them in stock again which was over a year. This was last December.

So, I happened to be on a trip and saw a plow with a BRAND NEW FIRESTONE 600X16 Drive Tire in Missouri where I was doing some business. Asked the ol' boy where he got that tire from and he said " ..just down the road"

Well. It was TRUE. The guy "just down the road" phoned St. Louis and for about 75 Dollars per tire with shipping they almost beat me home back to East Texas!! I'm very pleased with them and they look correct for my machine.

Sam, I did find a tire for about $70.00 from Miller tire which is almost three times what I paid for the spreader! They also have a boot kit which costs much less. I'm wondering if that will work on a sidewall tear that is about 12" long if I put in a tube. The tires don't carry much weight since the spreader is very small. Does anyone have any experience with boots?
