I have the book and went to check timing. With the feed fork 14 & 5/8 inch away from the specified place and the front of the plunger centered at location the feed fork seems right. With the needle tips flush with bottom of chute the plunger is all the way back. ( towards the pto) Is the plunger out of time? Is it permissable. The needles clear the plunger when moving all the way foreward. I have disconnected the plunger stop. Please advise.

My 14T manual says 17 5/8" - don't know if you typoed or the setting's different on a 24T. I'm not sure what you're asking but you might be confusing the needle "home" position (slightly below the case) to the needle "timing" position. The clearance (1" - 2 1/4") from the needle tip to the plungerhead face is measured when the needles are starting to lift and are flush to the top of the groove in the bottom of the bale case and the plunger is on its'compression stroke (travelling to the rear of the case) at the beginning of the tying cycle. Try tripping the knotter clutch and turn the flyweel around by hand SLOWLY and watch what happens. Disconnect the pto shaft from the tractor (if it's connected) and support the shaft so it doesn't bind. Hope this helps.

My book states that the left hand edge of the tip of the front feeder tooth should measure 14 1/4 to 16 1/4 inches from the left hand edge of the front feeder support. it also states that the face of the plunger should measure 1/2 to 2 1/4 inch from the tip of the needle with the needle being flush with the top edge of the slot. My plunger is nearly all the way foreward (towards the pto)with the needles in this position. Although the book says to remove the knotter drive chain it seems to me that it would be easier to use the main drive chain.????? ???.

It must be a different measurement for each model. It sounds out of time all rite. Firstly, does your manual have a heading "Timing Marks" 6-8 pages after the "Baler Timing" info? That's where I start and where it started umpteen years ago when it left Moline or wherever JD built them. I suggest you check for the marks. If nothing else you'll know if the parts are original and still where they're supposed to be. My manual says to adjust the Plungerhead/Needle timing by removing the main chain as you wrote. As I mentioned, turn it thru tying cycles (no twine) as many times as it takes to make sure it's up to spec. Hope this helps. BTW, I'm hoping to take my "Ol' Green Girl" out to the field tomorrow to finish up some Brome grass that's been down too long due to wet weather. It should "freeze dry" tonite. There's a frost warning, something I don't imagine you see your way this time of year, if ever.
