I have a newly aquired 14 acre field that has probaly never been broken up. I cut it regulary with my 5 foot deere rotary cutter but now i would like to break it up to put out grass seed. The place is full of weeds. I have tried to bust it up with my 420 and a 6foot disc but it takes 6 or 7 passes to get it to turn over. should i try to find a small 2 bottom plow to get this done faster. I have weighted the disk down with blocks to no end. Bogged my mt so i had to move up to the 420. any help is well appreciated

I've plowed old hay fields in the fall, then in the spring, plow again, oppsite direction. Kills a ton of weeds, makes the field level and easy to work. If you just want grass, burning in the fall works good too. Broadcast seed early spring.

First kill the field with roundup, then find a neighbor who has a chisel plow and rip it, then smooth it off with your disc and spin on your seed. If it's hardpan, it'lltake youforever to get a good stand of grass without ripping it first.

If it's level enough, you can do as John suggests.

Or, spray it all down with Roundup now. Could hit it again in spring, then throw your grass seed down & at most lightly disk, or drag it. Or do frost seeding, spread it just as the frost is going out. Or if you are in a warmer climate, you can spray, wait a bit, level if you need to, and spread the seed then.

All kinds of options, depends what you have, & where you want to be.

A plow can be a good way to go, but it will be real lumpy after plowing, will need just as much disking to get that level again. Then a whole new set of broadleaf weed seeds may sprout.....

As you found out, what doesn't work is those little light disks on green sod. :)

Many other options, including a plow, if you can tell us a bit more of the situation.

What are you going to do with the field? Are you wanting it for grazing or hay or just to have a recreation area? I have an area that I wanted to have decent grass for the kids to play soccer or football on. All I did was to mow it often and I put down turf fescue with a rotary spreader. I didn't even go over it with a disk. It takes a couple of years but it's 95% grass now. I used about 150-200 lbs of seed for a 200x300 area.

John is right. Mow it with a sickle bar at least two-three times a year, the first time in mid-May, and the grass will start increasing dramatically. Clover will come in too. Fertilize with a couple hundred pounds per acre right after the first cutting in May and you should have nice rowan to bale by July 4. Then make sure it does not starve. Takes time, but we just got the third cut last week on grass on sandy loam and this year it was 40 good bales to the acre. And that is Western Massachusetts rock hill.
