Which corn planter?

I would like to find a good two row corn planter but, I don't know what I'm up against. I have borrowed a neighbors AC unit and it has worked ok but, I really would like my own. I'd like it to have ferlilizer bins as well as a way to put down insecticide as well as be well built and preferably two row. What are some good models and what should I expect to pay. I only plan to put out a little sweet corn each year. Maybe sun flowers, if that's doable, to give the ground a break. Thanks for any wisdom.

i was lucky and found a 4 row IH 56 for $35. all boxes are fibreglass and it has gandy boxes--i pull it with a wd45. a two row would likely bring a lot more--u likely can find a 4-6 row real cheap and cut them down. then u have extra parts for the rest of the machine. good luck. try to buy this fall, they will be in less demand than next spring.

I use an IH 56. There seems to be a few around. Also, there are older IH models where parts may be interchangable with the 56. However, whatever make and model you find, some things may be the same. First, most all fertilizer hoppers will be shot.Second, insecticide units ,like Gandies, do not care what color planter they sit upon.Third, 4 row units cannot be sawed in half and work, you should take the outside units off and try to work your way in. But why bother when you can probably pull a four row unit.Fourth, pick a model they made a lot of.

I like the IH 56 also, you can pull them with almost anything (I pulled my neighbor's with a 350 Farmall). They almost give them away at consigment auctions. Cutting one down from 4 to 2 would be a chore and unless your very handy you would have some very awkward fertilizer boxes and you would lose the markers, but then at that size you shouldn't need them anyway.
