I recently purchased a used John Deere Van Brunt Model B Grain Drill with a the Grass Seed attachment.

The Grass Seed attachment has a setting range of 0 to 10. I want to plant 25 lbs per acre but have no idea as to which setting between 0 - 10 to set the grass seeder for.

Can anyone help me out?

Paul, I have a JD/Van Brundt Model B grain drill, with the small grass seed attachment. Mine is 14 holes on 7 inch spacing. Still can't help you without more info: 1. What are you planting? 2. How many holes? 3. What spacing? By the way JD still sells operator manuals and Parts Manuals for these drills. I got both.

Tom,

My JD/Van Brundt Model B grain drill is a 12 foot model. The spacing is 7 inches with 20 holes. The grass seed bin is made up of two 6 foot sections. Each 6 foot section has 10 holes spaced 7 inches apart.

I am planting a Dry Land Pasture mix. Makeup: 30% Crested Wheatgrass, 20% Luna Pubescent and/or Oahe Intermediate Wheatgrass,
20% Paiute Orchardgrass, 20% Smooth Bromegrass, 10% Ladak Alfalfa. The supplier is recommending that I put down between 20 & 25 lbs per acre based on the information I provided him on the make-up of my pasture.

I tried using the John Deere Web site but was unable to locate the operator manual or parts manual for my drill.

Sounds the same as yours just a little wider.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Paul

Paul, I can't help you with the setting of such a mix of seeds. Best you get the chart and then try to figure the setting for each seed, then extrapolate an estimate. Weigh out about 20 lbs, spread across the small seed box, write down your acre meter reading, keep stopping and checking the seed, make adjustments accrodingly. If you have a good JD dealer he can get you the manuals for your drill; JD still reprints all the old manuals. Good luck.

I checked a manual I have for a JD "B" (not Van Brunt) drill. JD bought out VB at some point in the 50's or thereabouts. There's a grass chart for various types in the manual. Buffel Grass & Buffalo Burr - now they sound interesting. What are you seeding? The procedure in the manual is kind of lengthy and a little complicated. I won't try to describe it here. I'll leave that to others. I use trial and error but that might prove difficult for a beginner. I'm curious about the 25#/ac. rate. It seems to be high - just wondering?

Rob,

This is the make-up of the grass seed that I will be planting:

Makeup: 30% Crested Wheatgrass, 20% Luna Pubescent and/or Oahe Intermediate Wheatgrass,
20% Paiute Orchardgrass, 20% Smooth Bromegrass, 10% Ladak Alfalfa

The supplier is recommending 20 to 25 lbs per acre based on the infromation I provided him regarding the location, amount of rain fall and current conditions of my pasture. I am planning on seeding about 14 acres into this pasture mix which the supplier is calling a Dry Land pasture mix. I get between 30 to 40 inches of rain fall between Oct and April and then that's about it. I have no means to irrigate any of the pasture.

Thanks for your comments.

Paul
