Little Giant Hay Elevator

I recently purchased an elevator from a neighbor. The elevator screeches loudly when running unless old motor oil is poured on it as you start up. I noticed the adjusters for the chain are not adjusted equally. One bolt is threaded out farther than the other. I am wondering how I can be sure the chain is adjusted correctly. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Sounds like the chain is too tight. I have an old Little Giant that I couldn't do without. There is about 1/2" to 1" slack on the bottom side between each carrier on mine. We put up around 2000 bales of alfalfa and grass each summer, oil it everywhere at least twice each season and store it in the dry when not in use. Too much slack will let the chain bind in the gap between the drive sprocket and the channel if a heavy bale is put on the elevator since the tension is actually on the bottom. Too much tension will work the motor harder and wear the chain out quicker. The idler sprocket at the top should be straight so it doesn't pinch the chain. With the drive belt off you should be able to turn the large pulley easily by hand. Back off the adjusters and see if that takes care of the problem.
