Nathan, the number one thing that determines how sharp knives stay is shearbar, shearbar, and shearbar. With the shearbar are 2 different things to be attentive to. 1-When the shearbar does round off, turn it around or replace it. 2-This is the MOST IMPORTANT. Keep the shearbar set close and set it at least twice a day. If you keep the shearbar setup close so it tips the knives, you will find that the knives almost self sharpen. I have a neighbor that sets his shearbar a little bit closer that "tipping" and he goes the whole season without sharpening at all! I'm serious. This is a true story. I DO NOT advicate anyone setting the bar that close. If you do, you do so at your own risk! I did share that story to illustrate how setting the shearbar often and close keeps the knives sharp that much longer. Steve

We used to have a 717 super. If you sharpen the knives every morning or so you should be just fine. If you run 8-10 hours a day maybe twice a day. I really liked our harvester we sold it and now I wished we had it back. You can tell by looking at the chop. If it is really starting to get leafy just touch them up a little.
