New Holland 450 question

Well the NH 450 sickle bar self destructed again. I've got all the part as started to put it back together but the bolts for the two top pitmans don't want to line up. Under the front plate (if looking from behind the sickle bar where the belt pulley and pitmans connect to the cutter bar) their are a lot of very thin metal shims under the plate where it bolts to the body of the implemet. Are they supose to be there? I'm hoping things are just twisted a bit from sitting out of level..

Yes Joe, they are. Those shims are used to raise or lower the whole pitman assembly so the pitman drive plates are the right height to align with the hole in the knife head. To be honest, I do not understand your question. Can you redescibe the problem. These pitmans are relativly easy to take apart and reassemble. I just cannot follow what you mean by not lining up. Do you mean the bolts that go thru the cast housing and the pitman link or the bolts that go thru the 2 drive plates and the pitman link? Steve

Sorry, I don't know the correct terms for sickle bars. The bolts would be ones that go thru the cast housings and hold the upper pitmans. The bolts that hold the drive plates to the pitmans are already tight.

Joe, I'm slightly confused as to why you can't line up the bolts. Simply lift up the pitman assembly and pivot the top 2 pitman links untill the bolts go thru the links. I'm not trying to trivalize your situation. I'm sure I am just not understanding exactly what you are having trouble with. If this doesn't help, can you email me with more details? Steve

Yeah, it use to be that easy..but something must be bent. You can get the bolt thru one casting into the pitman but it is offset 1/4" from going thru the hole in the other casting. It does it on both pitman bolts. After fighting with it last night we set it on the equipment trailer so we had a flat work space. With a little prying everything went back together. So far so good..
