Like a lot of guys, I have a couple of plows I can't parts for anymore. Points are the big problem. I know alot of other guys in the same fix. It would seem to me that there might be a way to adapt the replaceable Kvernland point to older plows. I know an Amish farmer near here put a Kvernland bottom, the whole thing, on a horse drawn plow, so it's possible. Any ideas? I've done the welding a point on method and it just isn't the same. Maybe there's a way to mount a Kvernland frog to the plow frames and get the whole Kvernland benefit. Anyone ever done this? Yeah I know it would be expensive, but not as much as a new plow.

Brett - Another place that has alot of IH, Ford plow parts is Noack Farm Equipment. They are located in Benton Harbor, MI. Phone 616.849.1218. Ask for Harry. Most of the stuff he has is Super A & IH.

It has been a couple of yrs. since I was last there but I scrounged around and found some good moldboards for a 2 btm Ford plow I have since sold. He had a real nice '57 Ford 960 for sale some time ago that he was only asking $3000 for.

Bret: Why Kvernland, John Deere and IH will wear better or at least they would 15 years ago. European bottoms are just an expensive way to plow. Besides I can still get points, shares, moldboards and landsides for my 50 year old plows.

I bought an old Oliver trailer plow a couple of years ago, I think it's called a Rooster Comb because of the way the drop mechanism looks. When I went to get new landsides for it, the young fellow at the parts counter couldn't find an Oliver part like it, so he compared the old one I brought in to what he had in stock and picked out a couple that fit; I think they were labeled Ford. Parts is parts.

Well said. I have an old Pittsburg. Went to a used parts dealer and he had a new set of Oliver points that fit. Plus why buy an expensive new plow. Arund here you can get a good 5 bottom plow for less than scrap iron price. Cut it down to a 2 bottom if you need one.

I have been buying and selling used farm equipment since I was in high school. We live on the edge of a big city. (Louisville, Ky) There are hundreds of "city farmers" that want equipment to handle their gardens. I have a great market for 2 bottom, 3 pt. plows. I can't count the number of times that I've bought 3 bottom, or 4 bottom plows, at "giv-a-way" prices, taken them home, and removed the 3rd and 4th bottom, to convert them to sellable 2 bottoms I have picked them up for relativley "nothing", and sold them for a good price. (Plus, this builds the "spare parts" pile, and the scrap iron pile) For what I would spend on a set of points, shins, landslides, and mouldboards, for the average set of plows, I can pick up 5 or 6 complete, working plows. Why buy parts when you can get the whole plow?

Pittsburg plow co. made Oliver, White, Case & Ford plows. That's what all the local dealers told us We had a White when our dealer didn't have it he called one of the other guys. Always fit fine

Well guys, I can't get points, moldboards or landsides for a Dearborn, a Case or an Oliver I've got. Tried and tried and nobody has anything that fits, or so they say. I mentioned Kverland because of the replaceable point system they use and because they just melt through our clay around here. My IH #8 plows it fine, but a point lasts 2 years and then it's replacement time. My supplier is running low on them. Still looking for ideas.

Oliver is pretty standard, not thatr hard to find. What exactly do you have, and how hard have you looked?

I needed a part for an older JD disk. the kid behind the counter looked & looked & looked through his parts computer, could not help me, must not make any more. My stuff is just too old.... The owner (semi-retired, only in 2 days a week) happened to walk by, looked at my broken part on the counter from a distance, walked down a bin isle, grabbed one, and set it on the counter for me. Kept walking.

Just how it is, helps if you can find a more experienced parts guy.

Should be able to find Oliver plow parts. Dearborn should be out there too.

Paul: You are so correct, when you start looking for parts for old tractors and equipment. Just walk in, don't rush right up to counter, check for the guy with gray or no hair, he remembers way better than the computer.

In all due fairness there are some young parts guys doing quite well also, bet if you go home to their backyard there is an old tractor. In short you just have to get to know the parts guys. They are only going to get good at what they deal with every day.

You might want to look at the bolt pattern on the frogs of the IH. It may be possible to get frogs for throw-away (Super Chief style) shares and moldboards off a newer IH plow in a salvage yard and just change the whole assembly. Same could probably be done with the Oliver. My neighbor switched over a JD #44 from Syracuse fitted to High Speed throwaways that way.
