I have a super 69 hayliner, wasn't in very good shape, rebuilt the pickup, new plunger rails & knives. Problem is random miss ties on 1 side. Ties 10 misses 1, ties 3 misses 2, ties 25 misses 1, etc. The knot is only on 1 end of twine on the misses, knots are good and sound on the tied bales. All adjustments seem good but where should I start to tweek, needle, billhook, twine holder? I'm 300 bales in @ the moment, about 500 more to go. Any help wopuld be great, thanks in advance.

On adjusting the twine fingers, they should close and just miss the needles as the point of the needle passes the twine disk.
Also, there are two types of arms, one with replaceable roller bushings (the older one) and ones that can your supposed to buy the whole knife arm. You can replace the non-replaceable ones by grinding off the top of the arm, replacing the bushing, then tack welding a new washer on to hold it. Save you some $ If you've still got 300 bales to go, might be worth doing in the morning while the dew dries off. Save you a lot of aggravation. About a 2 hour job.

Thanks for all the input. The missed knots are on the twine disc side. Baled 400 bales yesterday, after much misc tweeking (including twine tension, broken spring)Last 200 only missed 12, 4 of which were @ twine changeover from 7200 to 9000. Still missing, but better, rollers on knife arms are worn & flattened in spots,(the worst of which has yet ot miss a tie) bill hooks are pretty new. About 250 more to bale, hoping to get results better still and then go through the knotters. This machine had'nt seen a field in about 20 years, except the one it was sitting in, so I guess I should'nt complain. Thanks again for everything, I'm certain to be back for more advice.

Check your twine fingers and twine tension if the knot is in the top strand if I am understanding you correctly. You should have about 15 lbs of pull through the needles for twine tension and the twine fingers should be adjusted as close as you can to the needles. Follow the instructions in the manual for this. They do not have to be out much at all for it to miss every so often.

Hey BG,

Replace both bill hooks and and check the roller bushings on the knife arm that swings across and cuts and pushes the twine off the bill hooks. Have a 65compact hayliner and a 273 super hayliner. ALSO did you know that there are two different bill hooks for balers. One for poly twine and different one for natural twine. My 273 did the very same thing your talking about and ordered new bill hooks and replaced the bushings like i mentioned above and haddent missed now in over 2500 . Good luck and by the way I have bought parts, service and operators manuels for all equipment that I own.. Worth weight in gold..

Like Jerry says, which end? Find you a New Holland manual. They show common faults. If I had to guess, I would guess twine is pulling out of twine holder. Compair tension on twine holder of both sides. Compair timing of twine disks with each other.

Which end of the twine is the knot in. The top or the front. Makes a difference in what might be the culprit.

I think I would start with replacing the twine with the best stuff you can get your hands on , it makes a huge difference in some balers
