Gentlemen,

I have a problem. I have an old drag type double disk plow in need of attention. I have no idea about the make, the model, or even the manufacturer. Today, its only color is rust and this is the way its been as long as I can remember. Measured across the disk its 27 inches, and whether this means it was originally a 14 inch plow and has had its disks rolled so often its missing an inch of disk, I have no idea. But here's my problem.....the rear disk was allowed to run too many years without the retaining nut firmly seated against the back of the bearing and the result is I now have a shaft on which the nut will no longer hold, a.k.a., its worn out!! I have removed the disk, hub, and shaft from the plow.....removed the disk from the hub....heated the hub and successfully driven the shaft from the hub. Now....with no further information....does anyone know where I can begin to inquire about a new shaft??? Or am I destined to visit the high dollar guys at the machine shop and hope for a miracle?? Or wait...would the chances of finding one still available today be the miracle? Anyway....I am eagerly awaiting anyone's response who can help!!! Thanks!!

Totally off your topic, but a roller shaft broke on my round baler. I called the dealer, & he said go to your nearest welding shop & have yours rebuilt. He said new they are $500 with shipping. He said they haven't ordered one in years - they have a welding shop remake theirs as well for about $150-200.

So I went to my local welding shop, they looked at my parts & said it was easier to start from scratch. So they built a whole new one for me - for $155. It is stronger than the OEM one.

That's just one example. In most cases, the local welding shop is a lot cheaper than finding new product these days. In my experiences.

Of course, if I were you I'd want to figure out what brand it is and check anyhow. :)
