Post hole digger PTO speed

I got a Post hole digger with my tractor.
I have not used one before but have a need to now.
It has a sticker that says PTO speed 300rpm max.

I am assuming that means that I need to run a
fairly slow engine speed. Say my 540 PTO engine
speed is 2000rpm. This implies that my PTO gearing
is 3.70 (2000/540). This means that I need to
run the engine at 1100rpm, right? I am a bit
worried that I will be lugging the engine.

Advice to this novice will be much appreciated.

I also run mine just above idle. One caution, however, is to control the dig carefully with the 3-point. I have a 12" auger, and at idle the PTO has more power than the 3-point ... meaning it is possible to bury it so that the 3-point can't get it back up. I also shut off the pto for the final pull-out - had less dirt fall back into the hole and left it deeper that way. Good luck.

Good point. When I read your post I had a
great vision of the 3pt lifting the front
end off, trying to free the auger :)

I run mine just above an idle on my Farmall 200. Lugging the engine doesn't seem a problem. Hitting rocks with any speed does!

What you are guessing is how I run mine. Should work fine. Slow is good for a phd. A tractor with a foot-gas pedal is really nice, you can varry the speed, slow when starting the hole, a little faster when trying to spin the dirt off of it....

(I'll assume the other one got posted before I caught it - yes, I meant 'dirt' not 'dort'. ;)

Paul, I am assuming that you do not have a university education. Over there the terminology is SOIL. HaHa I have lots of dirt on my place and a little dort too. Ed
