Baler size for my tractor

I'm considering baling my own grass. I have 8 acres in horse hay. I have a 3 year old Kubota 4WD 32 HP tractor. I'm going to look at an international 435 SQ baler and need to know if my tractor is big enough to handle this baler? Or if another size or brand would be better. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Kenny

Thanks Paul, I purchased a NH #67 we'll see how that works.

Well, you have enough hp - barely, but that would be enough.

The problem is your tractor _size_. I'll bet it's a lighter compact, and the baler will weigh more than the tractor. Balers have that big plunger going back and forth, and so they rock the whole rig back & forth. A light tractor has issues with that, as well as traction to start the rig up a hill or more importantly stopping it without jackknifing. Balers often have upwards pressure on the tractor hitch when the chute is full of hay, making a light tractor even lighter.

Also, with the plunger/flywheel combination of a baler, it had some different shock loads to the drive train. Some compact manufaturers won't cover the warrenty if you had a baler hooked to their small tractors. While yours might not be under warrenty, it does bring up an issue to think about.

A baler only takes about 15-20 hp to keep it running, but the flywheel stores at least that much energy, and pushing the plunger can use close to 50 hp for that instant. Kind of an odd implement that way, nothing is constant. The tractor just keeps the flywheel spinning, and the stored energy in the flywheel does all the work. But it's constantly slowing down, speeding up, catching a shock load. Older tractors or bigger new ones are better at handling that shock.

I like the sound my Farmall H makes when its running my baler. It just grunts right along.
