Repairing a bushhog

Hello All:

I am repairing my brush mower as the metal where the gearbox attaches has cracked at the bolt holes where the gearbox attaches to the deck.

The problem that I am having is that I am unable to remove the cross piece that attaches to the gearbox output shaft and that the blades attach to.

The crosspiece appears to attach to the gearbox with a splined shaft. I cannot feel the splines at the end of the hub closest to the gear box.

I have an alternate way to repair the mower if I cannot remove this crosspiece.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to remove this piece? I have tried a small two jaw puller as well as four c-clamps.

i had to do this to a JD mower once, the shaft was a tapered spline, i took the bolt out of the end and welded a large nut to the hub, then i screwed a bolt into the center and used it as a puller to pop it off. then once i was done i ground off the welds and popped the off. worked good since i couldnt get a puller to grab onto the hub very well.it was on there tight too, it made a heck of a bang when it finaly popped off

If it's an actual "Bush Hog" there should be holes is the deck that you can stick a bar in and use it like a large punch to knock the bar off.

A large H puller with 2 clamps to hold it on the bar plus a lot of heat.

My rotary cutter gearbox has a tapered out-put shaft with a spline. To remove the blades, I use a large two jaw puller. You tighten the puller and then give it a good rap with a 3 pound hammer. Good luck with yours. John in NY
