Frey loader hydraulic cylinder repair

I have been helping my neighbor repair a cylinder on an old Frey loader. One of the main lift cylinders was leaking around the rod where it goes through the gland nut on the end of the cylinder. He got a new set of seals (internal as well) and we installed them, it works fine and is no longer leaking around the rod, but now it is leaking where the gland nut threads into the end of the cylinder, despite tightening it as much as we can. The threads are straight cut, and I think there must need to be some kind of gasket or O-ring between the nut and the end of the cylinder, but my neighbor says there was nothing there when he took it apart, and the repair kit he received from his dealer did not have anything in it. I was not there when he took it apart, I don't know if a gasket fell out and he did not notice. Does anyone have any info on how we can seal tis, or even a drawingof how the gland nut goes into the end of the cylinder? Thanks for any help.

Don't know about your cylinder, but on a hydraulic bottle jack the top nut is just tightened down on the resevoir cylinder at the factory. When you rebuild the jack it's just not possible to tighten the nut like it was, so I put a layer of permatex where the nut contacts the tube. Let the permatex dry for a day before filling with oil.

Duke(WNY),
Thanks for the info. We had been discussing using something like silicone, or GoreTex expanded Teflon Joint Sealant, but were not sure if it would hold the pressure, which according to specs I found on his tractor (White 2-75), on another site, is about 3,000 psi. I just estimated that a 10 ton bottle jack might have about a 3 inch diameter cylinder, that translates to about 2800 psi, so if that has worked for you, it looks like it might work for us. Certainly it can't harm anything, so I will get some Permatex and try it. It does appear that his cylinder is built the same way as you describe a bottle jack. I had wondered if the surfaces had to be lapped together, like the valves in an engine, however, with the threads on the gland nut, it is impossible to lap the two together.
Thanks again for such a quick reply. This is the first time I used these forums, but it seems like a great way to exchange info.
