I just purchased a 6' right hand cut McCormick grain binder at auction. It still has a lot of the original finish and decals showing, and appears to be fully operational. Can anyone tell me when McCormick produced the 6' right hand cut binder? I also heard that the right hand cut was a rare machine. Any comments on this statement?

Thanks, Darryl

Darryl: Right hand binders were first built by McCormick in the late 1890's. From 1901 to 1913 the "New Open Elevator" was built in both right and left hand models. The "Improved" Left Hand was built 1911 to 1925 and the "Improved" Right Hand was built 1913 to 1925. I think IHC quit building the right hand binders at this time as the Type "C" (1923) and Type "E" (1938) are only listed as left hand binders.

Kovas: I don't know a lot about binders however the binder I was refering to in my earlier post was rubber tired with pto drive. In fact the one I remember was an IH and was bought new around 1950. The grandson of the guy who bought it new has the binder and the IH thresher of the same vintage completely restored. He is now working on a WD9 to thresh with.

Darryl: I just looked in the book 150 Years of IH and he does not show a right hand binder. I know they do exist as I can remember them, not many but a few. He states IH built it's last binder in 1956. Most companies ended production about same time. I think all binders changed to right hand near the end, but so near the end that very few were ever built. If you use the year 1956 as the end of the binder I think farmers were ahead of companies in change to combines. I will bet that binder production was quite low the last five years.
