I have only 100 acres of hay to bale, can't afford or justify a new baler.
I would like some opinions as to which old baler to buy. I would of course search until I find one that had lots of life left in it.

My tractors are older, lower HP so I need a baler to match.

I am looking hard at a John Deere 14 T. I need opinions about this model as well as 24 T and other older JD balers. What is the difference between a 14 T and 24 T, how reliable are these, are there parts and manuals?

Any suggestions on ANY old baler NH, IHC, MM, Oliver etc.... would be appreciated. (ones to avoid...ones to seek out...)

100 acres of native grass hay in SD yields about 2600 bales. A new baler is out of the question here.

Thank You! I asked about an old baler and got opinions about tons per acre etc... I am in exactly the same situation, in Western Nebraska, it doesn't rain much anymore, plus like you, I am baling one cutting of native grass which definitely will not even come close to the tonnage others have suggested. I could easily bale and stack in less that a week. I wish there was that kind of yield!!!

But.....I DO appreciate all of the responses, they are ALL valid and will be considered down to the bottom line.

i bought a 273 new holland with a kicker for $1000 this spring. so far i have did 24 acres 3 times. needed to replace a belt on the kicker.

If you don't see the economics of a new baler with that much hay, you best plow it under and rent the land. I would hate in 2003 to try and find the labour for that much hay.

Definitely want to think seriously about some good equipment. With 100 acres at 200 bales per acre you will have 20,000 squares. Even with fairly new equipment it is all I can do to put up 1/2 of that. Plus that will take a lot of hand labor or an automatic bale wagon. Even being conservative at $2 per bale for grass hay; that will give you $40,000 gross the first year. A new baler will run you about $15K, depending on how you get it. That is a cheap investment in that size operation. My 336 JD will just barely keep up on 10,000 squares. 1 day down with a bent twine tucker rod cost me $3600 in rained on hay. At least if you plan on getting a used baler, get 2 of them. That $3600 I lost will get you a pretty good 336, that's what I am going to do this fall.

excellent points!! with this scale we used to use a round baler on just 40-100 acres for our own cattle on the farm i worked on at the time. this is a huge amount of hay and the value lost will pay for a couple of new balers. or at least trade in every year and dont hesitate to call a service man or have one on call who works at the dealership for this scale. i remember how i would fret and worry on my own 6 acres at home when it was down.of course it doesnt mean a new baler might not be a lemon or break down but at least it will eliminate a lot of risk!good luck and let us know how it works out!

One hundred acres of hay around Central Iowa would yield around 25,000 fifty pound small square bales. That is a bunch of hay to push through a 30 year old baler. I would seriously look at a NH 565 or 570. The newer machines would give added reliability and capacity.

For parts, knowledge, & getting the job done, stick with NH or JD. The other brands are a gamble in older balers - might work, might not.

'Only' 100 acres????? Around here you get 2-4 cuttings per year, that would be _a lot_ of hay!!!!! I'd want something newer. One rained on cutting getting rained on would cost you more than the savings of an old baler.

What are your older tractors, even new balers don't all need a whole lot of power.

I run a NH 270 (same as the 271 mentioned) with a 36 hp Farmall 300 from the mid 50's. Nice team, but I only do 25-40 acres of baling a year.

If your looking for a older baler, I recomened a New Holland 271. I farmed with one for years, behind my IH W-450,they made a perfect team.

I agree with Bob. 14T's are good balers but you need something newer for that much hay. Look for a 336 or something of that vintage, you will be much happier.

Only 100 acres of hay? All in square bales. You need something newer 1970's maybe like a NH 268 or 273, at least. 14T is from the 50's, with that much hay it pays to have newer bale. Not saying that there isn't a excellent 14T but most are worn out. I ran a 24T for years and it was literally a trouble free baler with routine maintainance.
