I bought an IHC 1 horse mower today with a 4 foot bar. I probably paid more than I should have, $575, but it is in really good shape, and 1 horse mowers seem to be somewhat rare.

On the axle I see inscribed the intertwined "IHC", the number 1 with a circle around it, and what looks like a casting number, K785. This mower has exposed gears. There doesn't appear to be a gearbox, but there are several little hinged caps that can be opened to fill with oil.

I have done internet searches and the lowest number I have seen is a number 4, with a lot more people referring to #7 or #9 mowers. Could this really be a #1, or do I need to look somewhere else on it ? Does anyone have an idea when it was made, or what would be a good reference book on it ?

Thanks !

Bob, A good way to check on old equipment is parts books; they usually show pictures and years built. They also have part numbers by years built. Three McCormick one horse mowers are: Little Vertical Mower, 1902-1911 New One Horse Plain Lift Mower,1910-1924 New One Horse Vertical Lift Mower,1910-1924

However, I don't think you have one of these as that part number is not listed in this parts book. Most of the McCormick part numbers start with "M". Possibly that number indicates it is an old Keystone?

I've checked out C.H. Wendel's 150 Years of International Harvester from the library, and am wondering if the 1 with the circle around it means that it is an Osborne #1, which the book indicates IH sold as a 1 horse mower with a 3 1/2 or 4 foot bar, at least until 1917. Where do you find these old parts books ?

Thanks !

P.S. it's a gear drive (no chain), and doesn't have the large lift lever that some of the other mowers have. It does have a short lift lever, which is linked to a foot pedal, as well as a lever to adjust the angle of cut.

150 Years of International Harvester (think thats the title) by CH Wendal is the best source I know of. The only true 1 horse IH mower I know of is a #5. There may be others.

I have an old IH Servicemans Guide/Parts book that covers the IH 9, 16, 18 mowers. Manuel
