I got the chamber empty, but had a hard time getting the hay out of the very front. I thought that the hay might have been hung up on the hay dogs or needles. Come to find out that both hay dogs are broke and only have one broke off piece.
It appears to me that the needles on this JD24T are the same as what's on the Ford 530.(That's a Question.)It also appears that what caused the needles to break is timing. the main clue on this was shiny new sprocket aft of the clutch and no slack at all on the chain.I also noticed one bolt not attached to anything in front of the ram. Considering the age of the equipment and the evident lack of knowledge of the previous owner/operator I think I can get it going with a book and some of the knowledge out there.

Bill - I read your earlier post. Welcome to the fold of the many, many JD baler owners. Don't sweat the pieces of twine - it's normal due to the operation of the knotter. It sounds like you on a steep learning curve now! Yes, the manual is essential. Don't be afraid to ask questions and TAKE YOUR TIME! It will probably take a while to get your head around all the workings of the baler. You're now the owner of what can be a cantankerous yet fascinating and very useful machine. It just could be the best $250.00 you ever spent. Good luck with it.

Check your JD dealer for a book. I bought one from JD for a 14T for $12 . A place on the net wanted $25
