I have a #5 mower that I am trying to get fixed up to hook up to my 49 JD B with Power Trol. I have a new generic 2 1/2" bore X 8" stroke hydraulic cylinder that I was going to use on my 2 bottom "AH" plow. Can I use it on the mower also? The remote cylinder shown in the instruction manual can be adjusted from a maximum stroke of 8" to a minimum of 3", in 1/4" steps, and it seems to me that the adjustment is critical. My cylinder has no way of adjusting the stroke that I can see. I have seen spacers installed on the cylinder shaft...would that work for me once I determined the proper adjustment? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary

You could also try to find one of the low pressure John Deere hydraulic stop double acting cylinders of the sort it was designed to use. As this isn't a "classified" forum, I won't offer to sell you one of mine, but they are out there!

I agree withother post on cylinder, only thing nice about the stop is that you only lower it the amount you need to and it lifts quicker as you don't have all that dead area. The ring stops would work. Cylinder shown is probably an older JD with the bars and pins to set stops

i don't think it matters. when the cylinder is retracted the mower is clear down and floats.(the cylinder hooks to a hinged piece at the front) If your mower has a hand leaver you will have to tie out the dog so it can go up and down.

Thanks Cowman...the hand lever has either been broken off or removed (or the mower may have been ordered from the get-go for use with a cylinder.) But that is a good point that I wouldn't have thought of. I would have had my first wreck before I even got started!
I am starting to have second thoughts about this. this seems like a fairly complicated piece of equipment and I am trying to make one out of two, and both units have seen better days. Oh well, let the games begin! Thanks for your help.

Gary:

I wouldn't worry too much about the cylinder. As a previous responder stated, the one in the manual is probably from an older cylinder. I use a JD No. 5 with my 520 with a cylinder lift but since the mower has been in the family since 1950, we have used it behind a 1946 'A', a 1950 'B', a 1951 'G', and a 720 - all with double-action cylinders. We also used it for years with an A-C WD-45 for years and it had a "single-action" cylinder in which it lifted but then just "dropped" to lower the mower. Good luck!!!

Gary, my dad and I rigged up a hyd cylinder lift on our #5 back in 1960 when we put the mower behind a Farmall H. We salvaged the cylinder from the header lift on an old combine an fabricated the mounts and brackets as needed. We would mow 500# acres of prarie hay with no problem.
