Horse power requirements

I am looking for basic "rule of thumb" Horse power requirements for operating a small squate baler like a John Deere 14T Baler.
I would like to yse my Minneapolis Moline ZTU if possible.

A 9N ford or a CA Allis will run a 14T.No problem

Just as important as hp is the weight of the tractor. An old one is probably heavy enough. You need to control the heavy baler & possibly a load of bales behind it.

For hp, most of the 40 year+ balers require 15-20 hp to run the baler, & 10-15 hp to move the tractor & baler through the field. Add 5-10 hp to pull an attached hayrack. Make sure you have brakes. You can be on the light side of these numbers on flat ground with no wagon, and want to be on the heavy side in thick hay on irregular fields with a hayrack behind.

I don't know much about MM, you will be much happier with a live pto, but will learn to get by without it. Without live pto, a little extra hp is nice.

I don't know the rating of your tractor. The engine driven 14T used a 17 hp engine. The baler has a huge flywheel so hp doesn't have to be high. Actually overpowering the baler is not a good thing. A lite tractor will "rock" more to to the action of the plunger. Hope this helps.

I ran an Allis 303 with a Moline "R" so you're Z shouldn't have a problem. I had a shot of me driving the "R" we called Sam because Sam is who we bought it for at $250- (good tires, perfect sheet metal, ran great) pulling the Allis baler and a half loaded rack. ANyway the Ex threw away a bunch of my pictures. Grrr!

Actually I dont. Sam got cut up for scrap some years back. It spun a main and locked up on Dad, who probably hadn't changed the oil in years (Gee, I only put ten hours a year on it, seems a waste of oil ya know!) and he traded it for an Allis B. I had left the hobby farm for the big city in '85.

I have showed dad what old iron is going for these days and he's kicking himself over some of the stuff he let go or sold after I left!
