I am sort of dragging this over from the IH fourm.
I am thinking about getting a older one to use with my Farmall 300. I know nothing about round balers, so I need some info.
My 300 with a rebuilt motor is going to maybe push 40 hp.
Looking for baler ideas that are easy to turn.
Speed is not a big issue, but cost is.
Maint and repair cost are a issue. Also parts cost.
Also if you have an idea what the price range would be.
I need to suck up alot of info before I start looking hard. So let me have it.

4X3 bales that would be a great size for me.
How old are these balers and what do you think the price range would be on one?

Maybe a NH "Log-Chain" round baler? They are pretty heavy..... ..If we somehow manage to rent another barn in the area for our cows, that is what I would want. I believe the 845 makes 4 by 5 bales(Ain't 100% sure on that). I would like to find a 5 by 6 with net wrap.

They do a good job, but they do knock off a lot of leaves if you are into alfalfa.

That would be a row-crop 300? Then at least you have some weight. With baling, round or square, it's not just hp, it's being able to control the baler - needs a heavy enough tractor.

I'd look for 4x6 baler. Then you can make 4x4 bales, which you should be able to handle. In light stuff or if you feel confident, you can make bigger.

Gehl, JD, NH are all familiar around my part of Minnesota. I really like the Vermeer I picked up last year, but they sold a lot of big balers, not so many 4 foot models.

It's really nice to have wide belts on the outside of the baler, if not all the way across. Makes starting a bale _much_ easier. Also hyd tension is really nice, but my 300 hardly has enough hyd pressure to keep up with some of the stronger balers? The spring tension works, but hyd is more uniform, packs a better bale.

Are you storing inside or outside? For outside storage, the tighter you can pack that bale, the better! Tight, tight, tight!

There's a start. :)

It says PTO req were 26 pto hp in hay.

Summary of Hesston 5800 Rounder Overall Performance: Overall functional performance of the Hesston 5800 Rounder was good in most crops. Ease of operation was fair while ease of adjustment was good. Operation of the twine wrapping mechanism was fair.

Capacity: Average field speeds varied from 8.0 to 10 km/h (5 to 6.2 mph) while average throughputs varied from 4.7 to 12.3 t/h (5.2 to 13.5 ton/h). Ground speed was usually limited by pickup loss and not by baler capacity. Feeding was aggressive in all crops but was reduced somewhat in long, coarse-stemmed sweet clover due to sluggish compression roller feeding.

Bale Quality: Bales were well formed and neat in appearance. The Hesston 5800 produced bales with an average length of 1.5 m (60 in) and an average diameter of 1.8 m (70 in). Hay bales weighed from 780 kg to 895 kg (1720 to 1975 lb) with an average density of 225 kg/m (14.3 lb/ft).

Power Requirements: Peak power take-off requirements were about 19 kW (26 hp) in hay and 14 kW (19 hp) in straw.

Leaf Loss: Leaf loss was comparable to that of other large round balers. In heavy windrows, at optimum moisture content, bale chamber loss was less than 5% while in light, dry alfalfa, average bale chamber loss was 16% and pickup loss was 11%. Heavy windrows, proper conditioning and baling at the maximum permissible moisture content all were important in reducing bale chamber loss.

Operator Safety: The Hesston 5800 was safe to operate if the manufacturer's recommendations on operation and adjustment were closely followed.
I found a web site that rates these older balers and has pdf files with photos :-)

With the changing of one gear a Vermeer 504G or Super G can be pulled with a 34 HP tractor. We have many a MF135 & 3000 Ford's baling with these balers.

504G or super G are they new ones? New ones not in the budget at this time. If not what year were they made?

Not new ones, MFG from 1978-86
Current prices are $1,500-$4,500
You can also reverse the gearbox but going from a 13 tooth sprocket to a 12 tooth sprocket seems to work best. If you have any questions call us at 423-282-6969 ask for William he has do a hundreds of balers like this for many people and it cost less than $50.

Hi, my brother has an IH round baler that makes 4x4 bales. I can't remember the model number but I believe this baller is made for IH by Hesston. He uses his CIH 495D about 42 Hp to run it and it handles it OK. He has an IH 684 but never uses it on the round baler. The IH 300 should have no problem with this baler either.

I had a 241 IH baler same as a 2400. I pulled it with a Allis WD not a 45 .I had a loader on it to hold the front wheels down. I cant really complain about the machine. It did go throught what seemed like alot of bearings, but it was old when I got it. The bottom belt tore out and we scrapped it .The IH dealer wanted $450 for a new belt. I will say it made darn good bales and all the parts were easy to get.
