I have recently bought a JD wagon and am trying to identify what model it is and what the capacity is. I has JD symbol on the caps, leaf springs, and six bolt hubs.

Any help would be apreciated as I am about to build a bale deck for it and I need to know what it will handle.

Bill:

I looked at my JD Farmers' Pocket Guides from the late '40s and early '50s. The drawings show the 943 - the lightest load wagon - as having the bolster, ergo the wagon box, sit down on the wagon frame. For the 953, the mid-load wagon, the bolster is separate from the wagon frame and raised an inch or two above the frame. The 963 was the heavy duty wagon and had the springing bolster. Since the 953 was the most popular and "common as dirt," my guess is that model is what you have. If so, it's a good, low center of gravity running gear and should give you good service.

Bill, there is very little difference between the 963 and the 953. I'll guess you have a 953. My dad bought one in 1946 just after the war. You're cast hubcaps means it is a early model. I still have the book for that gear. In it it calls it 3 ton at car speeds and 4 ton at tractor speeds. I think one with spring bolsters for a flat rack would be rather tippy.
