I have tried to fix the wobble box on a 474 (same box as a 489 and I have one of those too,) and unless you are really good at fixing gear boxes I would suggest getting the new box. The one I repaired did not last a season. I thought that someone put this thing together at the factory so I could too. Well it did not last. And if you replace everything you might need to then you will have close to the cost of the whole thing already assembled and ready to go. At least that is what I found. And the service manual actually says to replace the whole thing. The box itself is not to hard to disassemble. Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

I don't know about it on a 489 but I have rebuilt mine on my 469 a couple of times and also on a 488 and was not a major problem. I know the one on the 489 is going to be different but I can only tell ya what I have done. From what I have seen on them(489) I wouldn't trade one 488 or 469 for 2 of them.

I'm really sorry about the answer I'm about to give you, but it is going to differ with some of the other answers you received. I dislike what New Holland has done in this situation, but the reality is, New Holland does NOT want anyone repairing those boxes. If I could find the service bulliten from about 1980-1982, I could show you the documentation where New Holland told all us dealers to quit trying to fix them. To be honest, I remember that decision sorta made me mad. Why in the world would a company make a complete gearbox assembly that couldn't be fixed by dealers, let alone farmers. So, I was determined to learn how. To my knowledge,(I say this humbly) my co-worker and I are 2 of only a few dealer service guys that rebuild these boxes. To be honest, they are not straight up. If someone did open one up and fix it and it worked out well, I wonder if they got lucky or if they truely knew how to fix it. To do it right, you really should have a dial indicator and know how to use it. If not, you probably will wipe out your rebuild job. I will not get into an argument with anyone. If someone feels they can fix them without special equipment, so be it. I am sharing with you over 20 years of experience. If you still want to try it, let me know and I will try to fax or mail you the service info that New Holland had first come out with concerning rebuilding these boxes. Steve

Steve,

How about the wabble box on a 472? Are they rebuildable and by a "farmer"?

I see a lot of these for sale, but I worry about the wobble box, the rollers and replacement parts in general on them.

Yes Bill, farmers can repair the wobble boxes on 460,461,467,469,472,477,478,479,and 488. All these boxes are princably the same, even though all parts do not necessarily interchange. They are not necessarally a piece of cake, but at least you do not need special equipment. New Holland had a tried and true wobble box for many years and then decided that they wanted a new box that ran in oil all the time. I guess the idea was good, but the results were disasterous. I will say that by now they have the box perfected fairly well, but for all of you who have 489's made from about 1979 thru about 1985 or so,..... . OOPS!! Steve

I'm not surprised at your answer. It sounds similar to stories I've heard about people rebuilding auto/truck diffs. "How hard can it be?" is said. Well, not that it's rocket science but as a mechanic friend of mine told me once "You can't fix everything with an axe!" The neighbor did in his on a 495 and he sent it to the dealer after we looked at it. I noticed a zerk fitting on the bearing next to the wobble box he'd never greased! It's very hard to see and I told him to have a extension fitted to it so he wouldn't have to stand on his head to get at it. Don't know if he ever did.

Rebuilt my 489 box 2 yrs ago, cost $500. Lasted 1 season before taking out the main shaft again, This year I bought the box from NH. cost around $900 dollars. The box from NH inculded the pivot arm that drives sickle bar. If you have yours out- I would buy the new box before replacing the worn out parts.

I took mine apart a couple of years ago. It is pretty straight forward. After you get it out (and it is the devil himself to do that, took 4 men because all anyone can get on it is 2 fingers.)

Arm that drives the sickle will need heat (figure a good 30 min with oxy-acetylene). Seems like the chain sprocket comes off with a bolt and the piece on the other side (left) stays in the machine. Then each cover is just bolted on. Nothing fancy about it and not too hard to do after you pull it and get that arm off.
