I only have a 45 horse tractor with 4WD (or 4 wheel assit whatever you call it). My question is are there any round balers that can be used with this size tractor. No hills on my place just flat ground. I know that round balers come in different sizes.

What the others say. however, you are describing a small compact tractor. These have lighter drive trains, and at least if it is under warrenty, check with the manufaturer. Likely they will view your use as abuse, & will not warrenty repairs. You will certainly have the tail wagging the dog, you reilaize the tractor needs to tumble that big wad of hay. Lots of stuff behind you on a light tractor.

I use a 45 hp tractor with a JD 510. Make 5x5 bales but they are not nearly as solid as the ones guys make with the hydraulic tension baler. Get you a baler that makes a 4x5 bale and has an adjustable hydraulic tension pressure relief valve. You can adjust the tension to fit you if required. Vermeer 5400 Rebel would be a good fit for you. Do stay on flat ground though.
Good luck.

I have a Hesston 5540 baler. When I first got it I pulled it for several years with a Long 2360 tractor, 35 PTO HP. It would do fine as long as I stayed with 4x4 rolls and did not get in a hurry. I now use a Ford 4610, 52 PTO HP and roll up a 4'x6' roll.

Just find a variable chamber baler and you will figure out what size of bale you can make. My thought is a good 4x4 or maybe a 4x5 if on flat ground and not trying to roll up a 100 acres.

Just got through for the season with my Hesston 5540. I use a 2-70 White (70hp, but my backup tractor is JD 52 hp.

I think you're on the bubble at 45 hp., especially for full size bales. You can forget a soft core (NI) type because they need lots of power to wrap the outside. A pint size 3' x 4' or 3' x 5' solid core baler should work.

I have a new Vermeer Rebel 5400. It requires a minimum of 45 hp. I use a 60 hp tractor, and it gives it a workout sometimes. (Steep hills, and very heavy hay this year) You can get along with 45hp, but you might need to use caution, becouse a tractors power is usually relative to it's wieght. Don't get yourself into any spots where the tractor isn't big enough .

We have sold 83 New Vermeer balers this year. The Vermeer Rebel 5400 is the #1 selling baler in the USA.

I've owned a Vermeer 504is for about 9 years. It does a great job on haylage and longer first cutting. But i am getting totally frustrated with light later cuttings in that the hay at the start of the baling cycle comes up with the belts into the area above the twine bars and plugs it up and i have to manually push it back down before i can finish the tying process. I've been thinking about upgrading to a 554xl with net wrap but this problem has me looking at new holland. I've tried raizing the pickup closer to the starting rolls but then i have problem with tying mechanism getting caught behind the pickup tines. Any suggestions?

I run a Vermeer - one of a few used up this way. Mostly NH, NI, JD & CIH here. I've talked to a dealer who's got a used 504 XL that would suit me just fine if I could justify the expense. Of course like most everything in my yard, mine is somewhere between classic, vintage or antique!

That Rebel is a great baler. Last year at the Sunbelt Show in GA. The standard 5400 Rebel was baling hay in the rain while the Deere and NH was plugged up just trying to start a bale. The hay was cut the day before and had an 1" of rain on it. In all fairness to Deere and NH it was likely the operator having too much engineering, a farmer would have been a better operator and started a bale for them.
