I have been working on my New Holland 451 sicle bar mower. I got all of the new guards to fit against my new knives by heating them and bending them up. That was easy. Next, I adjusted my hold down clips, I tried to get .015" to .020" . I took all of them off (seemed like 20 times each, lol)and bent them in my vise. I would go back and check them, they would be either too loose or tight. Finally I got them close by heating them and bending one way or another. My mower turns freely. After using it for a while, sometimes I can't move the knives by hand, especially if the cutter bar is raised. I seem to remember you sugesting haybine guards. The wear plates are not a problem at all for me. Today I went to my N.H.dealer. I looked at a new 451. The guards looked the same as mine, the knife sections were bolted verse mine being rivited but the hold down clips were much different. They had an extra bolt going through the center of the clip that held another clip above the origional clip . Its purpose is to put pressure on the main clip to hold it close to the knife. Is that what you were sugesting I do? They also had shims under the clips and some between the guards and cutterbar on the other side. We bought our 451 new, it didn't come with any shims at all. It also has low hours on it. We use it for trimming. The only reason I started to work on it was to help it cut better, which it does but because of it not being able to sometimes move freely I know I still have a ways to go. I don't know if I should try those new clips ($175.00)? Because of all of the adjusting I have been thinking about now going with the guard/ knife system by S I distributing ( no wear plates and no hold down clips). I saw it at www.sidist.com, ever hear about this system? Thanks!!!
