The Long Story w/a New Idea of Ford balers.

The question has come up often here about this and I am still researching the issue and do not have anything final. I know Long equipment built Fords balers up until the mid 60's which would include the 150, 250 and 350 series. The 520 seems to be a 150 painted blue and white and the 540 from the pictures I see would have been basically the 350. According to a gentleman at Long that worked the Baler build line they quit building any balers in the mid 60's. Apparently New Idea picked up the contract for building balers for Ford and built the 530 first which was introduced in 1964 in parallel with the ending of the Long sourced family. I got this information from some Agco/New Idea engineers that were working there at the time. These balers were built exclusively for Ford and not marketed by New Idea at the time per their memories. Advertising literature drops most mention of the 520 and 540 by 1966ish suggesting that the stock of products had been moved and the change over to NI was complete. The 532 and 542 were introduced in the late 60's / early 70's but I am not sure of the dates. The 532 replaced the 530 and the 542 was the high capacity baler. Gehl made Ford's only round baler according to Gehl engineers but never made a square baler for Ford.

If I ever have this thing completely pieced together then I will come back with a more exact timeline....

One of the latest Gehl balers is an MF224.

Aha! Maybe that's what I was thinking. The MF and Ford balers look similar to me at a distance. Now that I think about it, didn't MF own Badger for a time in the '70s, and built its spreaders and hay and forage line there? Maybe Gehl got the baler tooling when MF and Badger parted ways?

I saw a new Gehl small square around 1988. It sure looked like a late-model Ford. During the 1980s, New Idea was selling small square balers under their own name, but they were a joint IH/NI design, not like the Fords at all. IH sold them at the same time, continued by CaseIH until 1987 when CaseIH started selling Hesston balers. (Interesting how CaseIH balers are now New Hollands) I'm thinking maybe when Ford bought New Holland, Gehl bought the Ford baler tooling? I can't find a specific source of info on the late years of Ford balers, either. I'd like to know.
