Changing Belts on NH 770 Chopper

We need to change the drive belts on our 770 chopper before we start chopping corn this year. We can't get the belts off of the rear drive line. Where do we have to take the drive line apart to slip out the belts?

Brad, this is not the most fun job in the world. Basicly, what needs to happen is you need to break the driveline over next to the cutterhead. Do you have the power sharpener on your machine? I'm going to assume that you do, but if you do not, then some of these instructions do not apply. Brad, take a look at the hub and pulley assembly that is sitting right on the cutterhead shaft. That hub must slide to the right on the splined shaft. Early 770's had a round snap ring on the shaft keeping the hub from sliding to the right. If you that ring, you must first get it moved all the way to the right first. Most 770's (but not all) have a 1/2" setscrew in this hub assembly.(If you have the setscrew, you may torch off the ring and permently leave it off). Loosen it to allow the hub to slide. Some machines have either/or. Use LOTS of pentitrating fluid on the shaft splines and slide (or should I say pound) the hub/pulley assembly far enough to the right untill it slides out of the stub shaft that will be sitting inside the hub assembly. Next, go back over to the bearing carrier that supports the driveline and remove the 4 bolts holding it in place. This will allow you to pick the driveline up and allow you to get the old belts out and the new belts back in. NOTE: The 4 bolts holding the bearing carrier are 1/2" bolts. The holes in the frame are at least 9/16" if not 5/8". This is done on purpose. When reinstalling everything back in place, make sure you try your best to get that stub shaft back into the bushing of the hub/pulley assembly as straight as possible. This is done by positioning the bearing carrier wherever it needs to be in those big holes. If you don't, you may wipe out that brass bushing after only a few sharpenings. On the power sharpener,whenever you are sharpening your knives, the stub shaft will be turning frontwards while the cutterhead is turning backwards. I hope this helps. Steve p.s. I assume you will realize that the short belt that runs the power sharpener also needs to be removed from that hub/pulley before it can slide over to the right.

Thanks alot Steve!! We f*?ked around with it for probably two weeks last year. We managed to make the old ones last with a lot of belt dressing and tighting, but that was definetly ther last year.
