I use 2 different implements, but have always thought about building a single one to do all.

I lay out my rows with a deep pass using a middlebuster with a fairly wide sweep. This give me a fairly deep planting trench with loose soil hilled on each side of it. I plant in the bottom of this.

The I make a pass with a cultivator set so the middle pair of teeth just throw the soil from the edges back in to the trench. A few weeks later I make another pass with the teeth set so they hill a little more, but I'd always figured if I put wider sweeps on the ends they'd hill even more than they do.

So if you make an implement with 3 shanks, and the middle one is either removable or else swings up out of the way, then you can do all this...and if you get a wide shovel-blade like an old-time potato plow it would harvest, too!

just my thoughts,
tom

get a pair of disc hillers (agri-supply) either 14 or 16 inch. build a frame to attach them to and go. agri-supply is on internet - good prices/company. wade
