How much horsepower is needed for a New Holland 790 chopper with 2-row cornhead?

Jim, I know guys using 80 horsepower on 790's with 2 row heads and they get away with it. From my humble observation, I believe at least 100 HP is preferable. The harvester is rated for 150 HP. Steve

We use a 1755 Oliver deisel on our Fox 3000 with a 2-row head, just have to go a little slower thats all.

50 HP per cutting row. remember you also have to pull wagon weather loaded or emety, up hill or thru mud.

on friends farm they chopped with 790 single row behind a ford 7000 then went to a ford 7710 and they seem to have plenty of power for single row,
we used 790 with 2 row for few years behind farmall 1066 ford 8600 and then ford tw15 the 8600 ran it fine the 1066 and tw15 ran it like nothing the 1066 was dynoed at 150 horse power when they did some work to it and checked the 8600 i think was 110 or so and the tw15 was think it was supposed to be 125 but it seemed to be as strong as 1066

when i was a kid i seem to remember that we used an oliver 77 or 88, but boxes were small then, and i remember they ofter drove with no box on the back of the chopper, and running a second tractor with a box driving along side , catching the load. and just watch how you end up on the field,so you are not going uphill with a full load.i also know you can go a lower gear and up your rpms. if you have live power.its also the mass of your tractor , do you have weights, calcium chloride in the tires. thats about all i know about farming. just kidding , i do know which end of a cow milk comes out of. cause if i didnt, dad wouldnt send me out to get milk for breakfast. allan b.

Jim, it depends a lot on how fast you want to travel (chop). We chop with an old 38 JD and mostly use a JD 5020, however, our corn was really short this year and we just used the 4020 JD with power shift and chopped it all in 4th gear with no problem. Years ago we used to chop a lot with a two row chopper and tractors in the 70-80 hp range. I would think you could get by with as little as 55-60 hp if you were geared low enough and it also depends on how tall and thick your corn is.
