Baler Trivia

OK, I have heard that Long made some balers for Ford, but never really heard of a Long branded baler - until now. A dealer told me they had a used Long baler for sale and this evening whole out and about I went for a look.

Sure enough it was a Long. It is orange and the model number in big numbers on the side of the baler was 680. While the needles looks OK, I saw a couple of blue needles laying in the pick-up with some other junk. On the metal tag, the Model number was I-500 and the serial number was I-235. The baler had a belt that ran vertically along the side that was twisted between the pulleys making a figure 8. Above the pick-up, visible, were three fingers lined-up side by side. The one nearest the front looked like the lower portion was broken. The baler is fairly large, but newer looking.

Is it possible this is the same baler as a Ford?

They want $350 for it.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

I would love to see a picture of that baler but if it is newer looking then it would be one of the balers that Long imported several years ago from Romania. They have since discontinued them as far as I know. If you look on their website then you will see pictures of hay balers in the tractor ads but they do not list them in the products section. They were originally red but it oxidized fast and turned orange.

Jerry,

The baler is, I believe, newer and it is a faded orange - just as you describe.

I wish I had a digital camera and I'd take a few pictures.

I am beginning to think that in my quest for an old baler that I ought to get myself a New Holland model 68. It seems that there lots of parts, parts balers available and a ton of info on this site with respect to them. And they have a reputation for being a reliable baler.

Bill;
Your discription sounds like the Ford 530 I used to own. Don't know that I ever knew what year it was built. Even the dealer couldn't seem to get it to put knots on both sides of a bale at the same time. I am sure the 530's and 532's used that "8" belt configuration. If it will make a bale than it is pretty hard to go wrong at $350. Just my $0.02. Good luck. Roy

I have heard from a pretty knowledgeable source (Jerry D) that Long made balers for Ford only until about 1964. After that it appears Ford balers were built by New Idea.

I have a Ford 542 with a figure 8 belt like you describe, but it's too new to have been built by Long.
