corn planter help?

I'm new here and hoping to get some advice from
people who know. I'm looking to plant some sweet corn and soybeans. I have all the tractors and tilling equitment. the last two years i've planted
with a hand wheel with mixed results. 1-2 acres.
I found a 71 series? JD corn planter set up on a tool bar 2 row, no fertillizer setup.$375 and also an older International 2 row planter 3pt hitch has a fertilizer spot but the hoppers are long gone.this unit needs some work but is free.
is it worth the time fixing it up with the fertilizer possiblity or am i wasting my time.
I can get a spinner speader for fertilizer and lime etc since i still don't have that covered
either. thanks jeff

Jeff if you decide on the JD planter, depending where you are located at, I am interested in the IHC planter. Have 1 and think I have the parts to fix another one.

Either will work fine. 'Free' is attractive, might as well grab it. However, you might want to buy the JD, so you can actually plant next year - I know how those 'projects' go too. ;)

If you ever do get around to fixing up the IH, you can sell one again.

Fertilizer eats up old planter parts. You won't find any. Get a spinner & broadcast. Generally you can't put enough N on as starter with the planter anyhow, so you'd need the spinner anyhow. Fert boxes are just to add starter near the row for pop-up, not do the whole fertilizing job - too much N & you burn the sprouts.

Spin on what you need before planting, and work lightly into the soil right away. If you planted 1000's of acres, it costs more this way; but not on small acreage.

Jeff I would go with the JD 71 they are simple parts are avalible I just bought a set of 71s 12 row units set up to no till there pull type good luck Kip

If the Deere 71 planters are in good shape it is worth the money. They plant right, are easy to fix but rarely break, and use normal JD seed plates. Put your P and K on the ground via bradcast and sidedress the N once the plant gets going.
Forget the junk. Hard to fix or figure out unless the basic item is in good shape. Have gone this route before and you wind up paying more than the good one--and that's if your time is free.

Whenever I get the crazy idea to buy something that needs "restoring" and try to fix it up RIGHT, I try to think of it this way. You can plan on spending 2, 3, 4.....times as mutch, and spend a ton of time figuring out what you DON'T have. Then spend way more time than you thought tracking down those parts. The next best thing to new, is complete and working. Deere 71 planters are about as good as you can get. Parts are easy to get if you need them. The price seems very good to me. I could sell dozens of them at that price! (Where are you? If you don't want it, let me know.) If it was me needing the planter, it would be an easy decision.
