The man who farms next to me has 10 acres of mixed grass that might be worth a second cutting in the next couple of weeks. He's got corn and beans coming in, plus he's building another silo, so he's not sure he'll be able to get to it. I said I might be interested in taking it off for myself. He said make him an offer. Question is what to pay. I'll custom bale somebody else's field for them for $1 a bale, but that seems kind of steep for the priveledge of mowing his field. Anybody have any ideas as to what to offer?
Thanks

I like the beer idea, but this man's a Mennonite, so I don't think it'll fly :). All good thoughts though. I appreciate it.

I bet he has a little brown jug hidden out there in the barn under the hay mow.

My neighbor,in central minnesota, figures that I save him enough in fuel and labor that he lets me have all the hay off a 7 acre field for nothing.works for me,but i'll usually head to the liquor store and grab some of his favorite beerand bring it over to him any way.My other neighbor works a little differnt though,I cut, rake and bale,he keeps half the hay i take the other half, that works for me to,cept he dont get no beer.

Here in MN for a good quality grass hayfield, if I cut, rake, and bale the hay for myself, I offer the landowner .25 a bale.

In Iowa we usually share hay out at 1/2 and 1/2, dropped in the field. Figure out what that hay is worth on the cash market, subtract what it will take you to pick it up off the ground, and then pay him 1/2 of what the total value left is. Good alfalfa is going for $3.25 in the field here right now, mixed grass $2 - 2.25.

What is land cash renting for? Here it is going for about $35 an acre. I would offer him $15 a acre for the secound cutting if it was here.
Or do share 1/3rd him 2/3rd you. That still comes out to $1.00 a bale for 3.00 hay. Hay is going cheap around here right now though. $1.75 for grass hay $2.00 for Alfalfa.
I am going to hang onto mine till spring. This June, crap hay was bringing $4.00 a bale. Supply and demand I guess.

I don't know how you are there, but here in NW Alabama, there is more hay than you can shake a stick at with all the rain we had this year.

Last year, I couldn't find anyoone to cut my ground and I had to bush hog it down twice. That wasn't a lot of fun.

This year I gave it to a fellow to keep it from getting back in that shape again.I have 35 acres of hay. He got 130 big bales the first cutting. The end result was he will give me turkey hunting rights and may be deer rights on 3300 acres. He also came back and wanted to pay me something after he finished. He is selling turkey rights for $1500 and deer for $1250. Works for me.

I have seen grass hay in the field selling for as low as $12 a big bale here.

The best deal I got out of the prior guy was .25 a bale for small bales.

It all depends on your specific area and circumstances.

It is funny how different things are for different parts of the country. I'm in Ct, at my place the dam turkeys and deer are in my yard all of the time.

what does hay sell for in ur area--here alfalfa is $3. a dollar to bale it and .40 to put it inthe barn. doesnt leave much for selling it and owning the ground. i dont have an answer--just throwing out the other side of the coin.
