New Holland 451 sicle bar mower cutter bar

I am re doing the cutter bar on our New Holland 451 sicle bar mower. I am replacing the knives, guards, wear plates and hold down clips. Question, is there an easier way to set up the cutter bar? I replaced everything first, set the wear plate that the knife rides on/against, then set the hold down plates .015" (some came out a little tighter than .015" and some a little looser than .015") above the knives. To do that I had to bend the hold down clips one way or another, put them back on tight and remeasure. Is there a better way to do this setup? Is the .015" that I am trying for the right spec? Thanks.

John, you are doing just fine. However, I wish I would have known you were doing this sooner. I would have recomended that you buy haybine guards and done away with the 26616 wear plates. They are a royal pain and I don't like them. I have been changing sickle bar mowers over to haybine guards. Steve

Will this will work on a 455 N.H. mower? If I use the haybine guards there is no adusting? That sounds great! I might be rebuilding my mower this winter.

Absolutely John. NO wear plates under the hold down clip. As a matter of fact, you cannot use the wear plate with haybine guards even if you wanted to. Steve
