Mounting a sickle-bar mower

I've about convinced myself that I want to get a sickle mower (eventually I'd like to accumulate a rake and a baler and bale my own hay).

I'm running a '50 8N (I realize that this is at the lower end of being enough tractor to make hay, but it's more of a hobby thing, than anything else), so I've been looking at 3 point mowers (Massey, Ford, Dearborn, etc.).
It seems, though, that JD #5 (especially and #38, to an extent) mowers are a little more readily available (and less expensive). I've also heard that mounting a #5 (and I'd assuma a #38, too) onto a 3 point system is just shy of rocket science.

Is it possible?

What all is involved?

How about a McCormick/IH semi-mounted mower?

Are any of the "semi-mounted" mowers gonna be worth my effort, or should I just stick with a 3point mower?

Lots of questions...

Thanks for your time...

Steve

I want to thank everyone for their responses and opinions.
I'll definetly keep them in mind (as I've save this thread locally) when I'm out looking for a mower...

I'll probably be back with more questions, before too long...

Thanks, again...

Steve

third party image

Here is a photo of my #5 when I drug it home from auction. The previous owner had used with a 3pt.
All he did was add longer bolts on the ends and a chain in the middle that he hooked to hold the wheight when he had it at the proper level.
I use it as a semi mount on my H so cant say how it worked but it does seem plausable.

Got a Deere 350 mounted on a Farmall 200 - Farmall has a 2pt hitch which I have converted to 3pt with a kit from Worksaver. Problem is that the Deere mower needs a drawbar to attach lifting link to as well as the 3pt hitch. As you lift the 3pt, the lift linkage pulls against the drawbar, and lifts the sickle bar. Problem is that there's no drawbar on the 200! Had to fabricate a special arm fastened to the left side of the differental housing as a substitute for the drawbar. Works pretty well, overall, however it won't cut everything. Even with sharp sections, and fairly good ledger plates, the mower balks at fine grass, tangled and downed hay, especially vetch, and if the wind's from behind, the hay will fall forward, and tangle over sickle bar. That's probably a problem with most sickle bars, however. 200 Does not have live power, but this has not been a great problem for mowing, raking or baling. It can be done with care!

Hay Steve,
Took a look at your post adn the replies. I have a little bit of advice to give along these lines as I do custom hay baling for a living. I first of all would go ahead and think about upgrading to a tractor with a live pto soon. PTO work without it is very difficult, can be done but not as easy as "live power".
I have owned one sickle mower and it is and was a New Holland 450 7'cut. I had to take my first one too the sale(ex wife problems) and I now have another that I got from a guy on the south side of town and I need to replace a few bearings on it. They are good mowers! You might also consider a John Deere 350, I have a friend who has one and he loves it. Says it will cut just about anything!!!???
Just a few thoughts to consider.
Gary

The Operators Manual for the JD # 5 mower gives instructions and diagrams for mounting on an 8N. (I have a # 5 that has been in the family for over 50 years and is still going strong.) It looks relatively simple (looks can be deceiving of course). I don't know about the # 8 or # 38 series. The tail wheel on the semi-mounts deadens a lot of the vibration to ground instead of to the tractor.

I run a JD#8 mower behind my M Farmall. Bought it from a friend who used it with his 601 Ford. No big deal to hook up one way or the other. I can send you some pics if you want of it on my Farmall. BTW, where you're going to get into a horsepower deficiency is running the baler, but that's another thread. Drop me an email if you want to see my setup.

I know that Arne Carlson (hangs out on the N-board and that "other" N-club) has modified a JD #5 for 3 point use. You might want to contact him for details and pics.

I use a JD #9 three point sickle mower. It was used by my aunt with an 8N before I got it. It took me about 2 hours to hook it up the first time, but the learning curve is pretty short. I can do it by myself in about 15 minutes now. I don't know how available #9's are in your area. I've seen a couple sell on ebay in the last few years for around $150. It cuts well and I'm happy with it. The JD dealer has been able to provide parts so far, but nothing major has broken on it yet.

I have a #9W JD mower 9'cut. Parts are still available. I use it on 125 acres each year only to clip pasture, beats the heck out of a bushog, easy on my tractor also.
