I just called the local Deere dealer and they want $205 for a complete pitman for a #39 sickle mower. Anyone have a parts book that shows the part number for the wood only?

Deere's not the only one with whacky prices- like the $25.00 zerk that New Holland tried to sell me for my tedder !!

If you have the metal components and the old pitman, just go to a local lumber yard and get a piece of hardwood,- oak, maple, etc. and make one. Did that for the AC from early fifties last week and cost only a few bucks.

I went by the Deere dealer yesterday afternoon to see what was up with that pitman stick and guess what. I was able to teach that kid a few things about reading his parts book.

As Bob said the H28286 pitman fits the #39 mower. In case anyone cares it also fits the 8W, & 9W above S/N 35800, #11, #37, and #38.

I guess working in the parts deptartment for a John Deere industrial dealer back in the '80's wasn't a waste of my time after all. ;-)

I would go to my local farm and home store and see if they might have the stick there. There is one about 30 miles from me (same town as the nearest Deere dealer) where I found a pitman stick for my #5 mower for $7.95. They had them for all makes of Deere mowers as well as other brands. Had the rock guards, ledger plates, replacement knives and sections. Much less expensive and of same or better quality than Deere.

What kind of goofball partsman do you have that couldn't find that?

I guess I have one who want's to make a better commission. :-)

I first thought there was a sub up to a new bearing, ends, stick, ect. That is why the price was so high.

He was also telling me the same number (AH16247) also went on the 37 and 38 mower but on e-bay there is a complete pitman set-up they claim goes onto a 38 but the stick doesn't look anything like the one on the 39.

It's reassuring to know that JD aren't afraid to charge top price for mower parts-they've never given away anything I've needed for my green machines! I don't have the book or your type of mower but I'm guessing it's only sold as a complete assembly as many other JD parts are. You might try showing the broken arm to a hardwood supplier/expert and you may be able to have replacements made or fabricate them yourself. I know of a neighbor who's run NI mowers forever that's done that. Good luck with the repair.
